8 tips to keep your cool dog cool:

SHADE.jpg

A cool shadow or a cooler umbrella

Please mind the Texas sun

Shaded from the blazing Texas sun by a large umbrella or a tree in full leaf, what a cool way to hang outdoors. Remember that dogs with short muzzles (pugs, pekes, etc...) can't be in the heat for long periods of time).

Swimming pools for everyone

Water is a great remedy

A child's swimming pool filled with cool water is a great way to cool off.

DOG ICE CREAM.jpg

Does anyone fancy an ice cream?

Spoiling your dog is sometimes fine!

Who doesn't like ice cream? While there are special ice creams for pups at the grocery store, plain old vanilla works just fine. Starbucks "Pupachinos" are also popular. Just remember, too much of a good thing is bad for the waistline.

Pupcicles as a refresher

Pupcicles are easy to make at home

Pupcicles are easy to make at home. Use an ice cube tray or freezer-safe bowl. Add a few kibbles or small treats to each cube or bowl, then fill with chicken broth and freeze.  A tasty way to cool down.

COOLING MATS.jpg

Lying down never was so refreshing

Cooling mats are a great addition

Cooling mats filled with water are a great addition to the shady area. Ever watched your dog dig down into the sand to find the cool damp area?  Same idea without the mess!

DOG WITH FAN.jpg

Fresh air

A fan is fun!

A fan is a great way to augment the cooling effect of the household A/C without increasing the electric bill astronomically.  Join your pooch for a cuddle, you'll love it too!

PLENTY OF WATER.jpg

Keep the water cool as much as you can

The importance of a cube

Most important for pooch and owner alike is plenty of water. Ice cubes in the water are an added treat for the pups.

Check the asphalt temperature

Hot asphalt awareness

Press the back of your hand firmly against the asphalt for 7 seconds to verify it will be comfortable for your dog.

About medications:

Medications, even those deemed safe enough to be dispensed over the counter can cause problems.  Medicate only on advice from a veterinarian. Do not give more than is recommended.

If this is a new illness for the dog, please speak with your veterinarian BEFORE giving any OTC medications. If this is a recurring problem for your dog and you've given this medication in the past, please see your vet if symptoms persist more than a couple of days, or if the symptoms worsen, or you see no improvement.

Here you can find an approximative dog-friendly counter medication, but always ask a veterinarian before giving any medication to your dog.
