How It Works:
Adoptable cats and kittens reside in habitats at 5 area pet supply stores. The cats are showing and being adopted seven days a week. This has helped bring the shelter to be no kill of cats.
What We Need:
Volunteers! Volunteers feed, clean, and socialize with the cats in residence. Typical shifts are one hour, but many volunteers stay much longer to play with the cats.
Requirements:
• Online orientation and training
• "Hands-on" training session at the store.
• Proficiency using our online scheduling system on your computer or phone*.
• No mandatory number of shifts.
• Age: 16 with dependable transportation or Adult Assistance.(We have many Adult/Youth Teams)
( * This enables you to easily schedule yourself when it’s convenient, or to pick up an open shift that is still available. This also enables you to track service hours or organizations or school.)

Our Commitment:
Before our commitment to become NO KILL you could drop by the shelter whenever you had time to spare and walk a dog or play with a cat. Not anymore, and there’s a good reason. Now the focus is on training to help make the dog or cat more adoptable.
Improving their behavior increases their chances of staying in their new home, so they will never be homeless again.
This approach means shelter volunteers are trained before they begin walking the dogs or socializing the cats. There are levels of training and hands-on experience a volunteer advances through. This has resulted in a 98% live release of dogs.
We believe in training animals.
Higher kill shelters don’t focus on training the animals, because the dog probably won’t make it out alive, so its behavior doesn’t matter. We are committed to changing the dog’s behavior and placing it in a home, regardless of how long it takes. What this means is that every walk for the dog is a training session to make them more adoptable.
